Vet Tech Appreciation Week

Every third week of October is dedicated to recognizing veterinary technicians' contributions worldwide. Vet Tech Appreciation Week lets us spotlight these heroes, acknowledging their dedication, compassion, and expertise. The 2024 theme, "Credentialed Veterinary Technicians Change Lives," showcases how Credentialed Veterinary Technicians can have a profound impact, known or unknown, on the lives of their patients, clients, colleagues, and community.

What Is a Vet Technician?

Veterinary technicians are the backbone of any animal healthcare team. They perform a wide range of tasks essential for diagnosing, treating, and caring for animals. From conducting laboratory tests and radiography to providing nursing care and assisting in surgeries, vet techs do it all. Although they are not allowed to make diagnoses, perform surgery or prescribe medication, they are the ones doing the “hands-on” work. Their technical skills and love for animals make them very valuable in the veterinary field.

Challenges Vet Techs Face

Despite their crucial role, vet techs often face numerous challenges. The job is not only physically demanding but also emotionally taxing. They deal with sick and injured animals daily, all while performing various procedures. The profession also requires a high level of dedication and long hours, often without adequate compensation for their time and expertise. There has recently become a shortage of vet techs in the field, affecting veterinary practices. Due to this, some techs work even longer hours, and we need to acknowledge their hard work and dedication! Vet techs need advocates more than ever before. Staying informed and informing others about how important vet tech jobs are can make a big impact.

Ways to Celebrate Your Vet Tech

1. Thank You Goes A Long Way
Sometimes, the simplest gestures mean the most. For example, bringing your favorite vet tech a thank you card, gift card, or personal gift can mean so much.

2. Post on Social
Show your vet techs and practice some love on your social channels! This could be an appreciation post or even a post letting your audience know who your vet techs are. You could also consider an educational post to your story. Many people aren’t familiar with what vet techs actually do, so Vet Tech Week could be a good opportunity to educate people on how important their roles and responsibilities are.

3. Leave a Positive Review
Positive reviews don’t just help businesses - they help employees, too! Leaving your veterinary clinic a positive review on Google and mentioning your vet tech by name can help their career and job performance. Plus, positive public recognition can go a long way in supporting hardworking vet techs.

4. Show Respect
Vet Tech Appreciation Week is not just about celebrating these professionals for one week of the year; it's about continuously recognizing their hard work, dedication, and positive impact on the animal healthcare system. Make sure you’re recognizing your tech whenever you bring your furry friend in.

Here's to all the vet techs out there – thank you for everything you do!
