Listen Up 20-Somethings: We’ve Got the Perfect Pet for You

It’s safe to say that times are changing and people in their twenties are no longer starting families like they were in the 1950s. So long are the days of 2.5 children, a dog, and a white picket fence, and you know why? Because it takes a lot of money and space to maintain those things and most 20-somethings don’t have much of either (which is totally normal – don’t freak out.) But for those Gen Y-ers who long for the companionship of an animal but know they can’t commit to a dog, we’re going to let you in on a fluffy little secret: rabbits could be the perfect pet. Here’s why.

  • They’re Perfect for Apartments. They don’t require much living space, they certainly won’t bother your neighbors, and you won’t be leashing up for any bathroom breaks. So long as you clean the cage (which we know you will), your landlord is going to love this.
  • An Alternative for the Allergic. There are many people who are allergic to dogs and cats but not to rabbits, making them a wonderful option when living with roommates.
  • They’re Playful and Full of Personality. Just like dogs and cats, rabbits have varying personalities and levels of affection. They’re just as capable of interacting and forming a bond with their human, and can even be taught to play games during study breaks.
  • Adoptable and Easy to Care For. Not only are rabbits less maintenance than their more popular peers in the way of training and space, they’re also completely adoptable through your local shelter.
  • They’re for Affordable. Of course, adopting is always cheaper than buying, but rabbit food is way less expensive and lasts much longer than a bag of dog or cat food. As a bonus, you can reduce food waste by giving your rabbit leftover greens and fruits and rabbits don’t require as many vet visits as their cat and canine counterparts.
